Historic Photos of Alexandria by Julie Ballin Patton and Rita Holtz is now available at the library. Published in 2008, this lovely 10 x 10 book includes nearly 200 photographs from the Alexandria Library, Special Collections and the Library of Congress. The photos provide a look at the changes which have occurred through the decades in beautiful black and white photography. Copies are signed by the authors.


Published in 2007, the Virginia Slave Births Index: 1853 - 1865, Volumes 1 - 5 contains the names of slaves born in Virginia after the state passed a law requiring all births and deaths to be registered. The information in the books was extracted and edited by Local History staff and volunteers. Information available in the index includes slave owner's name, names of infant and mother, multiple and still births, date of birth, and place of birth. There are more than 125,000 entries.


William Seale's The Alexandria Library Company highlights the history of the Alexandria Library Company.
