Duncan Branch Library

The James M. Duncan Branch serves Del Ray, Arlandria, Northridge, Warwick Village, Lynhaven and other neighborhoods in the Potomac West area of Alexandria. Named for the long-serving City Councilman and member of the Library Board James M. Duncan, Jr., the library opened in 1968 and was renovated and expanded in 2005. The 2005 addition features a green roof, the first for the City of Alexandria.

Meeting Room

Library meeting rooms are available to individuals and organizations for meetings of an educational, cultural or civic nature. The meeting room at Duncan Branch seats up to 50 and requires advance registration.

Green Roof

Duncan is the first City of Alexandria building with an ecologically-friendly rooftop, often referred to as a Green Roof. The vegetation and soil of a “green roof” reduce rain water to sewer run-off and naturally filter water that is discharged. A green roof also acts as an insulator by greatly reducing the indoor temperature within a building especially during summer months. Duncan’s Green Roof was sown in early September 2005 with a variety of sedum; the same plants have been sown in the landscaping of Duncan Library grounds, so patrons can see the plants of the green roof without a long ladder or a swing crane!

Become a Friend of the Duncan Branch Library!

The Friends play an important role in strengthening ties between the library and the community. They provide funds for children and adult programming as well as equipment and materials that enhance library services through book sales, membership dues and fund raising projects.
