How do I get a library card?

You may apply in person at any library branch with proof of your current street address and a valid photo ID. For children 11 and under, a parent or legal guardian must bring proof of current street address and valid photo ID and must sign the library card application. If you would like to print out a library card form to bring to any of the four branches, please click here. Cards are available to any resident, property owner, business employee, student, or resident of a reciprocating library's service area. There is a limit of one library card per person.


Can I obtain a library card online?

Yes. Alexandria Library provides an online application for temporary library cards. Select "LOGIN" from the library website homepage and select "click here to register online."


Who is entitled to a card?

Anyone who lives, works, owns property or attends school within the city limits of Alexandria is entitled to a free library card and allowed full use of the facilities. Library cards and privileges are also extended to those who live in the following counties or cities: Arlington, District of Columbia, Fairfax, Falls Church, Fauquier, Frederick, Loudoun, Prince George's, Prince William and Montgomery.

Can I get a temporary library card while I am in Alexandria for a few months?

Anyone who is temporarily living in Alexandria for less than six months can receive a temporary resident card. For this card, there is a non-refundable $10 fee. With this card, temporary residents are restricted to ten item checkouts, five of which may be audio-visual items. 

 

Will my temporary or non-resident library card allow me to use the library's electronic collections from home?

Any Alexandria Library cardholders are extended privileges to access our extensive selection of article and research databases and our various collections of free downloadable eBooks and audiobooks.
