Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering at the Alexandria Library. The goal of the Volunteer Program is to enhance the Library’s ability to provide quality services to the public. The Volunteer Program brings a wealth of benefits to the Library, its staff, the community and the individual volunteer.

Volunteers help in many facets of operations such as sorting, shelving, assisting with programs, and cleaning. Volunteers do not serve in ways that would jeopardize customer confidentiality and the customer’s right to privacy. Volunteers are not able to present story time or read aloud in the Youth Services Department. Due to the lengthy orientation and training process, volunteers should be prepared to commit to a minimum of two hours per week for at least six months.

To apply to volunteer, submit online or print an application and drop it off at one of the library branches or email it to volunteer@alexlibraryva.org.All successful applicants will be asked to submit to a background check run by the City of Alexandria.

Are you between the ages of 14-18 and looking for summer volunteer opportunities? Apply to be a summer teen volunteer with the Alexandria Library. To apply to volunteer, submit a Teen volunteer application to one of the library branches or email it to volunteer@alexlibraryva.org.

Want to help out but can’t commit to weekly volunteering? We are looking for individuals to assist with special events, such as book sales and other large one-time library events. Email us at volunteer@alexlibraryva.org to get on the list.
