The City of Alexandria was occupied by federal troops almost immediately after Virginia seceded from the Union in 1861. For four years, Alexandria hosted hospitals and military camps and provided supplies for the Union army. Travel to and from Alexandria was restricted, as this month's document shows. Visitors had to swear their alliegance to the United States government and provide a physical description. This pass was accompanied by a note vouching for the good character of the bearer.
