Consumer Ration Coupons, U.S. Office of Price Administration, 1942-1947

Coupons for shoes

Shortages on the American homefront led to rationed consumer goods. The Office of Price Administration -- established in 1942 and disbanded in 1947 -- distributed ration stamps in local communities. Families could then purchase foods (coffee, meats, sugar, and processed foods), appliances (stoves and fuel oil), and transportation goods (bicycles, cars, gasoline, and tires). Certain scarce items could be rented e.g. typewriters.
